January 11, 1935
Aviator Amelia Earhart began a trip from Honolulu to Oakland, California
that made her the first woman to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean.
January 14, 1784
The U-S ratified a peace treaty with England ending the Revolutionary
War.
January 15, 1929
Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
He inspired blacks and whites alike to protest racial discrimination,
poverty and war. In 1964 King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and
in 1986 Congress established a national holiday in King honor.
January 23, 1973
President Richard M-Nixon announced an accord had been reached to end
the Vietnam War.
