Issue Question: School Lunches
In an effort to fight the childhood obesity rate, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently announced new nutrition guidelines that schools will have to follow. The new rules outline some major changes to school nutrition, including limiting the number of calories that can be in meals and the types of milk schools can serve. Some feel schools need to help kids avoid unhealthy foods and promote eating more whole grains, fruits and vegetables. They feel that this new nutritional plan will allow schools to provide healthier options for students. Others feel that neither schools nor the government should decide what people eat. They believe that since the United States is a free country, people should be able to make their own decisions. They are not against healthy choices, but they think schools shouldn’t take away the other options. We want to know what you think, “Should the government regulate what foods are offered at schools?”
