1988
At fifty-four years of age
Mikhail Gorbachev became the youngest man to lead the Soviet Union since
Stalin in the 1920s. In 1990 Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
for promoting political changes in eastern Europe and ending the Cold
War. Gorbachev resigned his office in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet
Union.
1945
The United Nations officially
came into existence. The U.N. is an association of independent national
states that was formed by the victorious nations of World War Two. Their
goals include keeping the peace efforts they have achieved and to ultimately
end war.
1959
Fidel Castro successfully overthrew the corrupt government
of Cuba. Castro named himself Premier and eventually adopted a communist
dictatorship. In 1961, anti-Castro exiles backed by the U.S. attempted
an invasion to liberate Cuba. They were defeated by Castro forces
at the Bay of Pigs.
1914
World War I breaks out and
accelerates the growth of aviation. Advances were quickly made in strategy
and power. Planes were first used for observation and then for aerial
duels and bombing. Germany led the world in air power at the dawn of
the war with two-hundred and sixty planes and fourteen zeppelins.
